Publish Collate

2 July 2009 9 Comments

I think there is a need for this quick post about publishing before taking a few days away for the holiday weekend.  Before that, though, let me say U.S.A.! U.S.A.! U.S.A.!  I’m just in the Independence Day spirit I guess.

PUBLISHCOLLATE is an important system variable to consider when plotting.  It can affect not only your PLT files and PDF files,  but the order and interleafing of plots coming off the machine.

With PUBLISHCOLLATE set to “0″, a sheet set is processed one layout at a time with separate PLT files being created.  Plots from other users sent to the same plotter you are using at the same time may be interleafed, or mixed between yours.  Individual PDF files will be created for each layout when done in this manner.

With PUBLISHCOLLATE set to “1″, a sheet set is processed in its entirety as a multi-sheet PLT file and single job sent to a plotter.  A set sent this way to a plotter will be produced without interruption from other users.  When doing this, a single multi-sheet PDF file is created when sending a set as such.

Also of note, many users have found that when PUBLISHCOLLATE is set to “1″ they have regularly experienced problems.  There have been a whole range of issues from no plots being sent at all, to halfway through a sheet set the publish job will simply stall out.  Some of these issues stem from the fact that to plot multi-sheet files, you must have a driver that supports them.  Make sure you do and use this method with discretion.

    Hi guys,

I know this might be a bit off topic but seeing that a bunch of you own websites, where would the best place be to host. Someone recommended I use Blue Host for $6.95 a month which seems like a great deal. Anyone here on indydrafter.com using them?

I looked into Blue Host before decidign on JustHost as my service of choice. It is currently only $3.99 a month to host your website through them. Check them out here.

Q: Should not the collate variable be set in the publish dialogue “publishing options” palette? > multi-sheet or single?

Does this point at the same variable or something else entirely?

Your blog is undoubtedly showing drawbacks on my Safari internet browser.

Curiously enough, this option setting works separately (though similarly) from the PUBLISHCOLLATE system variable. The system variable affects all plotting actions, whereas the option to choose single or multi-sheet publishing within the sheet set manager affects only those plots being published via the SSM.

I test my site on many different browsers including Firefox, IE 7 & 8, Chrome, and Safari for both PC’s and the iPhone. With the exception of drop-down menus not quite working right within earlier versions of IE, there shouldn’t be any significant issues. I actually would normally consider a comment of this variety as spam considering the link (which I removed) and email address associated to the poster, but I wanted to publicly denounce any accusation that I haven’t done my due diligence on site design and testing for this website.
